Usagi is a main protagonist of the series. The day she meets a talking cat named Luna changes her life forever. Since then she is able to transform into a heroine of love and justice, Sailor Moon. If one were to summarise Usagi’s character at the beginning of the series then it would go along these lines: crybabyish, clutzy, naïve, and lazy, amongst other things. However, as series progresses, her personality matures as well. Later she learns about her past incarnation — in the past she was Serenity, the crown princess of an ancient Moon kingdom known as Silver Millenium.
Mamoru is a handsome black-haired young man who at the beginning of the series often teases Usagi by commenting on her falling grades and other annoying personality traits of hers, although as the time passes they become more and more attached to each other. It is revealed later in the series that he is in fact mysterious Tuxedo Mask who helps Sailor Moon fight demonic forces. In his past life Mamoru was a crown prince of Golden Millenium (a kingdom on Earth), Endymion, who was in love with princess Serenity. This love passes further onto their present incarnations as well.
Ami’s most visible trait is her intelligence. She is known as one of the best student in the country, always scoring top scores in national mock exams. Her hobbies include reading and playing chess, just as one would expect from a bookish type person. However, apart from studying she seems to enjoy swimming. Unlike Usagi Ami is much more introverted and shy though, and never boasts about her immense knowledge or other abilities. She becomes Sailor Mercury and is the first Sailor Warrior who Usagi befriends. Ami’s intelligence and rational thinking prove to be a valuable asset to the Sailor Team. Her Sailor Warrior powers are based on water element.
Rei is portrayed as a beautiful girl with long black hair. She works as a shintō priestress [巫女 miko] at her maternal grandfather’s shrine. Ray may be characterised as a very energetic, passionate, self-confident, and sometimes even stubborn girl — the fact which leads to her many clashes with Usagi. She also possesses some psychic abilities like seeing premonitions, feeling presence of evil energy, or banishing evil spirits. Rei becomes the third Sailor Warrior, Sailor Mars. Her powers are based on fire element.
Because of her great physical strength Makoto is usually perceived as a scary delinquent girl with whom no one wishes to mess. What lies underneath however, is much more gentle and feminine side of her personality. Makoto excels at cooking and enjoys house cleaning. She is also very prone to falling in love with every handsome boy she meets, always commenting how he seems to resemble her former love. This dual personality is probably a result of losing her parents at a young age which has forced her to lead self-sufficient and independent life. Makoto becomes the fourth Sailor Warrior, Sailor Jupiter. Her powers are based on lightning and wood elements.
Minako was a main character in the manga “Codename is Sailor V” which later became a prototype to “Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon”. It is for this reason Minako’s and Usagi’s appearance and personalities overlap in many aspects. Minako is depicted as athletic, cheerful, romantic, and clever. She may both act very elegant, intelligent, and refined at times and irrational, boy-crazy, over-ambitious, overconfident, and even goofy. She is obsessed with chasing idols and has a dream of becoming one herself. As Sailor V, Minako has in fact been awakened prior to Sailor Moon and thus has much more fighting experience than other Sailor Warriors. She presents herself as Sailor Venus to the rest of the team and assumes leadership when it is revealed that Sailor Moon is their princess. Her powers are based on love and gold element.
Chibi-Usa is a daughter of Neo Queen Serenity and King Endymion, the future selves of Usagi and Mamoru. She travels back from 30th century to seek help from Sailor Moon of the 20th century. Initially, her behaviour may seem as that of a spoiled child. She enjoys teasing Usagi and develops a crush on Mamoru, annoying Usagi even further. Chibi-Usa generally does not immediately identify Usagi and Mamoru as her parents, although she is aware of the fact. This is because Chibi-Usa has a hard time identifying both of them as such since she sees such a sharp contrast in personality between their present and future selves. Later in the series she becomes Sailor Chibi-Moon.
Setsuna is the oldest and the most mature of all Sailor Warriors. We get to know her as Sailor Pluto, a reclusive Guardian of the Time-Space Door. Later she is relieved of her role a as guardian and leads a civilian life. And even then Setsuna is rarely seen in the series, but once she has made an appearance, it is usually in crucial moments of the story. Setsuna shares a special relationship with Chibi-Usa. Her Sailor Warrior powers are related to time and underworld.
Michiru is a very talented person — she is both an excellent artist and a superb violinist. She enjoys swimming and her skills are comparable with Ami’s. Michiru usually appears to be stoic and very polite person. With her good taste, appreciation of fine arts and music, as well as her grace and elegance, she may be described as an ideal example of a lady from high society or even a princess. She has a romantic relationship with Haruka, and they seem ideally complement each others’ personalities. As Sailor Neptune, she treats her mission very seriously. She usually works with her partner, Sailor Uranus, and reluctantly joins forces with Sailor Moon’s team. Her Sailor Warrior powers are related to the sea, to which she seems strongly attached.
Haruka is often mistaken for a man because of her habit of wearing more masculine clothes, and having strong-willed, authoritative, and stubborn character. She is good at sports, owns a Ferrari, and considers racing as one of her life’s passions. Her flirtatious behaviour towards pretty girls further adds to ambiguity of her gender. Haruka feels particular affinity to the sky, and enjoys running, which she views as a metaphor of flying. She has a romantic relationship with Michiru, and they seem ideally complement each other’s personalities. As Sailor Uranus, she treats her mission very seriously. She usually works with her partner, Sailor Neptune, and reluctantly joins forces with Sailor Moon’s team. Her Sailor Warrior powers are related to sky and wind element.
Hotaru may be considered as one of the most mysterious main characters of the series. She is a frail and very ill girl who possess some psychic powers like healing wounds. Because of these powers she was feared and rejected by her peers, but luckily was befriended by Chibi-Usa immediately after they meet for the first time. As story progresses, we learn that she is an incarnation of Sailor Saturn — a Sailor Warrior, who, once awakened, will bring the world to its destruction. That power of hers is comparable to Sailor Moon’s and for this reason Sailor Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto fear her coming. It is only later revealed that as a Sailor Saturn she is not an inherently evil entity. Her Sailor Warrior powers are related to earth element which may be interpreted as metaphor of both death and birth.
Amongst the important supporting characters are two talking cats, Luna (ルナ Runa) & Artemis (アルテミス Arutemisu), who often act as advisors to Sailor Team. In the 30th century, they have a daughter named Diana (ダイアナ Daiana), who later joins Chibi-Usa in her journey to the present. Another familiar-like animals are two crows, Phobos (フォボス Fobosu) & Deimos (ディモス Deimosu), who dwell in Rei’s shrine.
In the fifth season, Sailor Team is joined by Sailor Starlights, a group of three Warriors from outer space: Sailor Star Fighter (セーラー・スター・ファイター Sērā Sutā Faitā), Sailor Star Maker (セーラー・スター・メイカー Sērā Sutā Meikā), and Sailor Star Healer (セーラー・スター・ヒーラー Sērā Sutā Hīrā), who became known on Earth as Kō Seiya (星野光 Seiya Kō), Kō Taiki (大気光 Taiki Kō), and Kō Yaten (夜天光 Yaten Kō) respectively. (Note that they share a name in common, not surname.) They are searching for their princess, Princess Kakyū (火球皇女 Kakyū Purinsesu), who makes her appearance later in the series. (In the manga, she is also able to transform into a Sailor Soldier, Sailor Kakyū (セーラー火球 Sērā Kakyū).)
